It’s such a controversial subject, TV. Everyone has an opinion on what screen time is and how long it should be, and yada, yada, yada (notice the Seinfeld reference? Lol). Personally, I don’t listen to any of it because I believe that we all know what is best for ourselves and that’s all that should matter.
Growing up I spent A LOT of time in front of the television. I grew up with a single mother since the age of 11 and TV slowly became a part of my “family”. When you live in a single parent household, it’s so difficult for that parent to do everything and be everything all the time. That’s how it went growing up for me, and I ended up spending a lot of my time in front of the television watching my favourite shows and spending time with all those families like the Tanner’s, Cosby’s and Keaton’s. Fast forward to today, and TV still has a huge impact on my life and has been a driving force for the success of my business.
Not having a Dad around and having a mom who was always out of the house working just to put a roof over our heads and food in on our plates can be a very lonely way to grow up. That’s where TV became a big part of my life. I would spend hours watching every week and would look forward to watching my favourite show each day and to be invited into those family’s homes and lives always brought some love and connection into my life as a child and teen. Some of my faves were Full House, Part of Five, The Wonder Years, Growing Pains, Silver Spoons (am I showing my age yet, haha!?) and so, so many more!
For me watching TV was a way to escape the loneliness I felt as a child. My mom worked 3-4 jobs in a day just to make ends meet, which left a lot of free time in the day for my brother and I. TV was a way to enter a fantasy land and imagine what life would be like growing up as DJ Tanner, or Samantha Micelli from Who’s The boss. I absolutely LOVED watching TV and still do. It’s my favourite form of entertainment and I’m not shy to admit it.
Being able to work with the talented costume designers of TV and movies as an adult is truly a blessing and my favourite part of what I do. I love having the women who played the characters I loved watching growing up, now wearing my designs on their current TV and film projects. It truly is such a joy and absolute thrill for me. I remember the summer when I was going into grade 8 and I spent a week at my BFF’s house where I was introduced to the world of Days of Our Lives and the infamous Sami Brady. I was mesmerized by the drama, and Alison Sweeney’s portrayal of Sami was the best! I loved to hate her, always rooted for her and to now work with Alison and provide jewels for her characters she plays today is really incredible for me and a true full circle moment in life.
designing for the women on tv i love
Candace Cameron Bure was someone I grew up watching every Friday night. TGIF on ABC was a cannot miss moment and you bet I didn’t miss a single episode of Full House. The love and support that those 3 girls grew up in was something I craved for as a young girl and being able to watch that was very inspiring for me and I try to implement those lessons myself now that I am a mom. The Tanner’s may have been cheesy, but that’s what I loved most about them! To now have Candace wearing my jewelry designs is a dream come true for me. I identified a lot with DJ Tanner’s character and definitely carry that admiration through today and am still a big fan of Candace Cameron Bure’s.  I really like that she has led a wholesome career and chooses to play characters that we can watch with our children now that we’ve all grown up and are adults too.
Creating jewelry for your favourite characters is something that I hold dear to my heart because I know that so many of you feel the same way that I do and love the connection you feel with those characters that you love so much.  Each time I am at my jeweler’s bench making and designing for these characters I think of you and what you would like to see these women on TV wearing. I think about how you feel when you open up your package and first put on that necklace that Candace wore on Aurora Teagarden. Being able to bring joy, connection and love to your life through the pieces of jewelry that I design and create is the most rewarding part of my job and what I do. Knowing that you feel good inside and on the outside because of that pair of earrings, or necklace is truly the magic of why I do what I do and I hope you feel it too.
