SUMMER IN THE CITY: WHAT TO DO IN VANCOUVER

The kids are out of school, and the weather is (knock on wood) fantastic! Are you on the lookout for activities in July? I'm determined not to let summer pass me by, so I did some Internet research and found a number of really great events happening here in the Lower Mainland!

 1. RICHMOND NIGHT MARKET

 DATE: 7:00 pm - 12:00 am, Fridays-Sundays, May through October

 LOCATION: 8351 River Road, Richmond BC

 DETAILS: The Richmond Night Market is the longest running night market in North America and attracts hundreds of visitors every weekend. With hundreds of booths, and tons of delicious food options, it's easy to see why! Children under 10 get in free, and general admission is only $3.25. Make sure you stop by the Roadside Diner for some delicious deep fried desserts!

 

2. SURREY FUSION FESTIVAL

 DATE: 11:00 am - 10:00 pm, July 23-24

 LOCATION: Holland Park, Surrey BC

 DETAILS: The Fusion Festival is back for another year, and is a fun-filled, family-friendly celebration taking place in Surrey's Holland Park. It's easily accessible by car or transit, admission is free, and there's food aplenty to sample from various international cuisines. Stay for a while and enjoy the plentiful entertainment!

 

3. PLAYLAND

 DATE: Open daily, 10:00 am-6:00 pm

 LOCATION: 2901 E Hastings St., Vancouver

 DETAILS: Playland is now open daily, and is a great way to get the kids out of the house this summer! There are thrilling rides for the daredevils, and more age appropriate rides and activities for the younger kids. Passes are available online, or at certain retailers. 4. KHATSAHLANO MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL

 DATE: 11:00 am – 9:00 pm, July 9

 LOCATION: West 4th Avenue in Vancouver, between Burrard and MacDonald streets

 DETAILS: This is the Khatsalano festival’s fifth running year, featuring dozens of local performers. It’s a great way to experience the local music scene! There’s also a fashion show, yoga, and cooking demonstrations among other things. The event is free for all, and kid friendly as well!

 

 

5. STANLEY PARK SUMMER CINEMA

 DATE: After sunset (around 9:00 pm) every Tuesday in July

 LOCATION: Second Beach, Stanley Park

 DETAILS: This family-friendly outdoor cinema is a fantastic way to spend a summer evening. This month’s showings include Napoleon Dynamite and The Little Mermaid, among others. Be sure to take a look at the website for location and movie information. Bring your own seating and arrive early to get a good seat!

 

            July is shaping up to be a beautiful month here in the Lower Mainland. Make sure you and your family take the opportunity to get out of the house and check out some of what the cities have to offer!
